Documents You Should Bring When Driving Abroad

At minimum, bring your valid passport, your domestic driver's license, and your International Driving Permit translation document. Keep the rental confirmation, your travel insurance details, and a copy of your itinerary handy as well, either printed or saved offline on your phone.

It's smart to photograph or scan every document and email the copies to yourself before you leave. That way, if your wallet or bag goes missing, you can still access the information you need to sort things out.

Keep your license and IDP together, since the IDP is only valid when presented alongside your original driver's license, not as a standalone document. Entry, driving, and car-rental requirements can change and vary by destination. Always confirm current rules with the relevant embassy, consulate, or local authority before you travel.
